Philosophy
My philosophy in teaching a new pupil is not predicated on a specific swing motion, angles, plane or any other "Golf Machine" verbiage. My ideal of conveying instruction is based on physics, feel and the structural make-up of my clients.
That being said, the basics are the basics and need to be treated like the foundation of a house, no matter how nice and well put together, it won't matter if the slab fails. So the very first thing after a firm handshake is an analysis of the grip, stance, set-up and posture.
Normally, those items will take up an entire session with my clients because the importance is high. It is cruical that all is well and comfortable with the basics before we get down to the business of the swing.
My philosophy also centers around balance, technique, and finish. Everyone has a unique way of getting to the hitting zone, some better and more efficient than others. I try to remove barriers that will allow you to swing the club more freely and with more confidence.
My philosopy is simple. Put a 5iron in you right hand, grip it like you normally would to take a swing, then take your left hand off the club (vise versa if your left handed) then take a full, relaxed swing. Pay special attention to what the club head wants to do through the hitting area. If you completely relax your muscles, you'll notice the club head automatically wants to "release" or turn over. Now put your left hand back on as normal and try the swing again. You should notice that in order to feel the clubhead release your grip pressure needs to be lighter than your used to hold it. As you've probably guessed by now, this is just one of the many swing keys I use for "slicers" to straighten out their shots. We'll discuss this more in the "Slicers" section of the website.
